The photograph is of the old market town of Mildenhall in Suffolk. Nearby is a major US Air Force base. There were plans to build a new runway there and could I illustrate the effect that it might have on the village?
I chose a gently ironic take on the way that people, aided and abetted by the press, will dream up the worst possible scenario, no matter how unlikely, in order to oppose a properly planned development; in this case the runway being built right through the centre of the town. This image was then incorporated into a ‘make-believe’ sensationalist headline in a national newspaper complete with silly sensationalist story.
The C-17 Globemaster II is one of the largest aircraft in the world and operates regularly to and from Mildenhall.
